Spring

I have been away for a few weeks and have just got back to the vineyard and its all looking fantastic. Its our spring time here in the vineyard with all the new shoots coming out looking for sunshine. The rainy season is just about over now although we had another inch the day before yesterday. However we had less rain than expected this rain season.

We will have to go through the vineyard in a few weeks and pluck off any signs of fruit. I am not sure if one should let the flowers set before we do this or if we should go ahead and do this before hand. Has any one got any thoughts on this?

  • I don’t think it matters much at this stage. Are you cleaning off the fruit on young vines so that they devote all of their energies to shoot production and filling the trellis? Don’t worry about damaging the vines, these are very resiliant creatures. The only factor is the ease of removal for the vineyard worker…too small and there’s a lot of squinting and pinching involved; and if you wait too long you may need to employ pruners on tough stems.

  • Thanks Dave for your input. We are cleaning off the fruit on the young vines so that everything will go into shoot production for next seasons fruiting canes. They are filling out a bit now and it will be easier to thin them. I cut them back quite short this time round to conserve energy and so they dont look to happy but they will be in good shape for the next pruning in October.
